Definition: The share of all births that are to unmarried mothers. 

Notes: Education attainment reflects data collected with either the 1989 or 2003 birth certificate revision.  For states using the 1989 birth certificate, education is measured in number of years of schooling, as specified.  For states using the 2003 birth certificate, the label "4 years of high school or less" refers to a high school diploma or GED or less.  The label "Some college, but less than 4 years" refers to at least some college or an Associate degree, but not a Bachelor's degree. The label "4 years of college or more" refers to a Bachelor's degree or higher.   Excludes births to mothers under age 25. Excludes metro areas with less than 100 births to mothers in the specified subgroup over the specified time period. Excludes plural births and births which occurred abroad, in Puerto Rico, or in U.S. Territories. Metro area refers to the location of residence of the mother at the time of the birth.
